Northrop Grumman’s LEO satellite payload for DARPA revolutionizes positioning, navigation and timing(PNT)

What is payload? It is the actual information or message in transmitted data, as opposed to automatically generated metadata.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Blackjack program has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) a contract for Phase 2 development of an advanced, software-defined positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) payload, with options to build units destined for space flight.

The PNT payload work is led by Northrop Grumman’s Future PNT Systems Operating Unit in Woodland Hills. The team supports the DARPA Tactical Technology Office’s goal of achieving capable, resilient and affordable national security space capabilities from low Earth orbit (LEO).

“Northrop Grumman’s software-defined Positioning, Navigation and Timing technology will offer military users an agile new signal from LEO that is not dependent on existing satellite navigation systems,” said Dr. Nicholas Paraskevopoulos, chief technology officer and sector vice president, emerging capabilities development, Northrop Grumman.

“Warfighters depend on assured PNT for traditional missions like force projection and joint operations, but also for emerging autonomous and distributed missions.

The PNT payload features Northrop Grumman’s Software Enabled Reconfigurable Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Embedded Architecture for Navigation and Timing (SERGEANT) capability. The Phase 2 development effort is valued at $13.3 million if all options are exercised through emulation, critical design and build.

Enhanced BeiDou short message service displayed at int’l summit

by Staff Writers
Changsha (XNA) Sep 20, 2021

An enhanced version of BeiDou short message service was showcased at the First International Summit on BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) Applications held in Changsha, central China’s Hunan Province, Thursday.

The new technology enables two-way communication on mobile phones in areas not covered by ordinary mobile communication signals or when base stations are damaged, which proves useful during earthquake relief, offshore fishing and emergency communication.

“Short message service needed a larger satellite terminal such as maritime satellite phone. But the enhanced version’s ‘low power consumption’ feature enables mobile phones to send emergency messages through BeiDou satellites even without ground mobile communication signals,” said Li Jingyuan, director of the BeiDou short message team at National University of Defense Technology (NUDT).

“The information transmission rate of the enhanced version has increased 10 times, which means pictures and voice messages can be sent out quickly,” Li added.

At the summit, NUDT, the people’s government of Hunan and China Electronics Corporation signed an industrial cooperation agreement to further expand short message service to low orbit satellite users, and make the service play a role in global satellite Internet of Things, international life rescue, global emergency communication and other industrial applications.
